European 944, Audi TT is awesome. Rabits are fun. Old Opel GT's are super awesome but prone to rust. Porsche 912(?) is a cool car. Best of all for rallying is BMW 2002 Tii.

Asian, I agree about the Talon/Eclipse. Old Accord's are also easy, and you can get a Vtech engine to throw in.

American. Can't go wrong with an old 'vette for 3 grand and then just rebuilding everything. There are enough mod kits and parts to upgrade the old 70 vettes, the 80's vettes and the 90's vettes. Air suspensions, 4 link rear ends with independant rear suspension, etc... make for awesome handling possibilities. You can go for aluminum big block or small V6 engines or even iron duke straight 4's. You can turbo or go na. You can go carburated or electronic ignition. You can install ABS or no assist at all. They are roll cage friendly. You can make upwards of 1200HP and still find a tranny that will be able to take it (MV35, MV40, MV41, 700R4 or 4 5 or 6 speed manuals).

Old Buick spiders are super fun, but parts are scarce.

Fieros are fantastic. There are even kits to fit Northstar engines into them. You can also build the iron duke superduty engines upwards of 300HP.

I concentrated on American as that is what I am most familiar with, not because it is the best choice.
