I had posted earlier on another BBS about my '00Vig and the Dunlop SP2000 tires. I was experiencing vibrations. The dealer was very quick to get to the point where they wanted to just replace them... I pre-phrased my discussion with the suggestion that at least one of the tires was likely bad, as it would get really bad "morning flat spot" syndrome, but not always, leading to the assumption that when it is parked hot on the buitl in flat spot, it would be positively thumpy.. (the car has about 2k on it by now, but exhibited the symptom since day one), and when they tried to get "one" tire on hand in case they needed to replace one, they were unable to locate any of the SP2000's anywhere, so they jumped to the point of replacing all four.... well, twist my arm. :^)
Someone had mentioned previously that they had replaced their Dunlops and noted an extreme difference in performance. After only a few days with the replacement tires(Michelin Pilot Sports), I can say that it makes the Viggen a whole nuthah' car... period.
With the Dunlops, I encountered wicked occelations upon using a heavy foot in 1st and sometimes 2nd, such that the streering wheel would buck left and right violently. You really had to hold on to the wheel. I adjusted pressures on the tires between 35 and 42 cold, and was able to replicate the behavior. Try as I might I cannot get the Michelins to do this. I will keep trying, but am I thinking that Dunlop has a problem on its hands. I cannot believe that the tire behaved like this when they chose it for the Viggen, so my assumption is that there is a design change or manufacturing defect in the tires that were on my car, or perhaps sitting on the NJ docks for 6 months baked a deformation into the tire. (and wouldn't it be nice to know, just to know?)
The ride of the car is much "nicer" than the Michelins. You still feel everything, but it is muted in comparision to the Dunlops, and perhaps this is not big surprise as the Mich's are a more expensive tire, and were designed to ride well as well as perform well. They do seem to let go of the road a bit easier at intitial start, or when pulling out of a corner in second, than the Dunlops, but perhaps they'll last longer with what feels like harder rubber. Haven't really pushed them in the corners yet, so I don't have much to say there yet.
