Why Saab?

Here's a question for those of you who visit this site, and this performance board in particular. Given that many of you have owned a number of Saab models, or own more than one presently, have the know how and resources to modify your cars, have car building, car racing and rally skills - why/how did you happen to choose Saab? Why limit yourself with 4 cylinders, a puckish transmission and FWD? Why not Ford or GM, Porche or BMW, or even a 6 Cyl Nissan? Aren't you dying to tweak a small block V8 and see 500+ HP?
How'd you all-American (OK, all-Canadian and European too) fellas get so into this particular car? I know how and why I did - because when I bought my first 82 n/a in 95 for under $2000 as a city run-about, I did so mainly because it always started right up, hummed along with a hint of zip, had good brakes, shifted smooth and had a great road feel.
The hands on wrenching, upgrading and tweaking over the years on this car is because I have solid mechanical skills (was a serious bicyclist since age 12, military helicopter mechanic at 19 years of age), I can do a better job than most everyday mechanics, and especially because a lot of things started to go bad after it hit 200K miles. I felt personally challenged to work minor miracles and keep it running at minimal cost. I'm sure if I bought an early model BMW or Prelude instead of a Saab, I'd do the same.
I'm now very attached to this car and see no reason to get rid of it any time soon. Yet, if I had the money to experiment, I know I'd be trying out a lot of different cars. I already have a soft spot for big sedans like Crown Vic, Bonneville and New Yorker. How fun would it be to be driving one of those cars with a modestly tweaked and supercharged engine with an easy 400HP under the hood!?
So what keeps you all so devoted to Saab?
