I think that "early" owners of DI cars in the US originally thought they could leave the sparks in the cylinder head for 60,000 miles. We were bombarded with (US) GM cars and Jap cars offering that capability at that time.
Over the years, I've seen DI equipped SAABS with plugs that easily had 50,000 miles on the (probably original) NGK plugs. They were so worn that there was no electrode left to visually inspect !!! (They were towed-in as a NOT RUN problem)
I've seen the same car back 2-3 month later for a new DI.
The 30k interval on the new cars' precious metal plugs works for some owners, but did not work for me.
Secondly, the adversion of most owners to $60 for replacement spark plugs does not help. Going back to the NGK copper plugs and replacing them @ 15k mile intervals is WAY less cost with no sacrifice in performance.
