Hi,
It's a simple matter to increase voltage. With transistors, one can
build a thing called an operational amplifier. With operational
amplifier and variable resistor, one can produce a variable amplifier.
Yes, power can be expressed in terms of current. The equation is
P = I^2(R). Notice the resistance. If resistance is 0, power is 0 and
resultant heat is 0.
As for your assertion that current is reduced across plug gap, well
that may be true, but again current in isolation is not what you want.
The electrons have to energize the fuel/air mixture. The unit you
want for delivering energy (again) is power which has units of energy
per unit time.
Another incarnation of power equation is P = VI. It's still the same
equation. So, if current decreases, voltage has to increase for same
power. To deliver the same power to fuel/air mixture, the power
delivered to primary coil is increased (again due to V^2/R at primary
coil).
Primary coil is an inductor which stores energy in magnetic field.
So, if heat causes resistance to increase there-by increasing heat
(energy loss), voltage has to be further increased to deliver same amount
of usable energy per unit time (power).
Dean was suspicious about zeke's post because he didn't think it
explained failure on primary side of DI. Well, the vicious cycle of
heat causing increase in voltage which in turn causes more heat does
explain failure at primary side of DI.
thanks
Jae
