Hi,
Heat is *not* a function of current. Heat is function of power.
Equation for power is V^2/R (or Vrms^2/Z for AC). If the gap is too
wide, a higher voltage is needed. This means that a higher voltage is
required in primary coil (ignition coil is a transformer) since the ratio
between number of loops in secondary coil to number of loops in primary
coil are fixed. So, by V^2/R, the amount of heat generated will increase
as voltage increases. DI is failing because of heat at the ignition
coils.
We're trying to make sense of catastrophic DI failure not as an academic
exercise. Like anything else, if we understand a problem we will be
better able to treat the problem. DI failure is a serious issue. That
is why we're trying to understand the problem better so that we may better
prevent catastrophic failure.
thanks
Jae
