On my 1999 95 the DI failed with family in car at 65 mph, and a long way from home and a SAAB dealer. The auto is out of warranty by 8k miles.

I complained long, loudly and bitterly to SAAB USA about the $ 600 repair the dealer quoted me, and got it fixed for free. There have been numerous issues with this auto, but in my mind the lack of reliability with the DI presents a safety as well as reliability issue.

I requested that unless SAAB can redesign this component that they send me a spare, so I feel safe operating the vehicle. SAAB answered that they are innovators, and any innovation can have some unforssen drawbacks.

The DI failure sparked my interest. Apparently it is nothing new, and it seems to be cuased by heat. The failure rate is higher in high altitude areas such as Colorado, where I reside and engines frequently can operate at somewhat higher temperatures.

I also own a 1997 Honda Passport with DI. Each spark plug has an individual coil which sits on top of the valve cover, where it stays cool.
At over 100k miles, I've never experienced a coil failure, and the plug change interval is 60k miles. Other owners cite similiar reliability expereince.

In reading the posts on how to prevent DI failures, things such as changing or gapping plugs at 10 - 15 k miles are mentioned. I personally think that the SAAB DI is defective in design, inherently unreliable and poses a safety concern. I believe that some at SAAB may have already come to the same conclusion, the SAAB dealers and independents I spoke with have.

I think that all SAAB owners with DI should call or write SAAB USA (or whatever country locale) and voice their concerns about this component. We deserve something which offers more reliability. Most ignition systems in modern autos are extremely reliable. In my 34 yrs of driving, I had a crankshaft sensor fail on a Taurus SHO, that's been it.

I think SAAB will respond if enough owners are concerned to make an issue of this.
