Hi PatO,
From what I gather, a larger plug gap than 1mm causes DI to work a
little harder, and like all electronic equipment, it heats up when
it has to work harder than normal and when electornic equipment heats up,
it looses conductivity. When the coils lose conductivity, they have to
work harder to do the same job, which leads to more heating.
In colder seasons or climates, the DI does not heat up to the extent
that it fails. The amount of heat it gives off is taken up by surrounding
air and its temperature is kept in moderation. However, during hot
seasons in hot climates, the surrounding air cannot dissipate the heat
of the DI cassette. So, the vicious cycle described above continues
until the DI stops functioning.
So, keep your spark plug gaps below .039" and you should be fine.
I think that I will replace my spark plugs every 5,000 or 10,000 miles
and gap them at .037" so that the gaps will still be acceptably narrow
by the time the plugs are replaced.
I still don't have a satisfactory answer to why DI on V6 engines do
not fail nearly as often, but I'm going to leave that issue unresolved :-)
thanks
Jae
