Jason brought me up to speed on the sophistificated functionality provided by the DI. And I absolutely agree on the quality on the SAAB engine, and having worked on many different autos over the years, I've found SAABs for the most part pretty straightforward to service.
Now to beat a dead DI (or horse), I wish the Swedes had a better appreciation for heat. I'm sure the components in the DI are of very high spec, but consider what they must endure:
- extremes in temperatures ranges perhaps minus 20 F to plus 200 F ?
- Many cooling/heating cycles
- Vibration
- Operating in what appears to be a non ventilated area
And electrical components such as ICs and coils produce significant amounts of heat themselves, and one has to wonder where DI components can transfer this heat to given their operating environment.
Given the above, one can understand why something seemingly minor like increased plug gap or high altitude operation is the straw to break the DI's back. My coil exuded transformer oil, but one could see the breakdown and cracking occuring in the black sealant which encases the components.
Personal computers use multi-stage cooling fans to account for environmental conditions as well as extra heat produced when the IC is working many cycles. These processors rarely fail, and are massed produced at far less than mil specs.
Due to the DI's lack of reliability, should SAAB equip their autos with a spare, similiar to a spare tire ? They would be the laughing stock of the automotive community.
To me the fix is simple, find a way to take heat off the DI.
