The non-German Syntecs are Group III "highly hydrocracked" oils, meaning they take conventional dino (mineral) oil and refine it a LOT.
This is different from a real synthetic (M1, Amsoil, German Syntec), where they actually create (synthesize) the molecules from scratch.
There's nothing actually wrong with the "fake" synthetics when used for regular service intervals (eg, 5,000-7,500 miles). They do not perform as well as real synthetics over extended drain intervals.
My biggest gripe is that the fake synthetics are priced the same as the real synthetics, but cost only half as much to produce.
But otherwise they're just fine if you don't extend drain intervals.
BMW's factory and service fill is a Castrol 5W-30 "fake" synthetic (A3 rated; not the same as over-the-counter Syntec 5W-30), which sells for $3.80/quart at BMW stealerships... So the real price is probably half that!
