Hi,
15W-50 is an excellent oil. It ranks only behind 0W-40 and 10W-30
5W-30 and 0W-30 do not stand up as well as the above mentioned viscosities.
In attached collection of VOAs (notice I mis-spelled "SuperSyn"),
you'll see that 5W-30 has the weakest additive package.
Most likely 5W-30 and 15W-50 have similar base stock. 15W-50 probably
has more Viscosity Modifiers. The only Mobil 1 grade which probably
does not contain any Viscosity Modifiers is 10W-30.
15W-50 has HT/HS viscosity greater than 5 cP whereas 5W-30 has
HT/HS viscosity of 3 cP
So, 15W-50 will protect better under hard acceleration by providing
solid hydrodynamic protection. In addition, in the event that 5 cP
is not sufficient to prevent oil from being completely pushed
out of rod bearings, 15W-50 has a solid group of anti-wear additives
consisting of ZDDP and Moly.
Red label Castrol Syntec 0W-30 is an unknown quantity. We _do_ have
VOA of it, but no UOA of it as yet. Also, there was some bad iron
contamination in the one VOA that BITOG nerds have seen.
Vancouver has moderate weather, right? So, 15W-50 is probably a
good choice. So are 0W-40 and 10W-30. Steer clear of Mobil 1 5W-30 and Mobil 1 0W-30
thanks
Jae
