Mobil 1 and Amsoil, and apparently this Castrol 0W-30, are made from "Group IV" base stock (base stock is the "oil" inside the bottle, the rest is additive), i.e., PAO (polyalphaolefin). Domestic made Castrol, and most of the other synthetic oils on the shelf, are made from "Group III", which is derived from crude oil. Note that "derived from" is a far cry from "fractionally distilled from", which is "Group I". Castrol proved in court that its Group III base oils are sufficiently removed from natural oils and its properties are close enough to PAO to allow it to be called "Synthetic."
This is a hotly contested subject, with strong arguments on both sides of the issue, and it's far too complex to be resolved or even argued in a quick BB posting. There may be a session on oil at the 2003 Saab Owners' Convention, so sign up!
