From what I understand, BMW was using Valvoline Synpower 5W-40 as their service fill before they signed a contract with Castrol in '99. I hear Synpower is good stuff.
But I would hesitate to use any Group III for extended drains (especially the 10,000-15,000 mile interval specified by most European carmakers).
As for your question, if the car requires an A3 oil, I'd use the A3-rated Synpower 5W-40, but not extend the drain interval past the manufacturer's recommendation.
Of course, the best way to learn which oil your car likes under your driving conditions (and for your drain interval) is by oil analysis.
How much are you getting Syntec 5W-50 for? Out here it costs the same, sometimes more than, Mobil 1.
