Conventional oil simply can not meet the same lubrication standards of "synthetics," (either Group III, Group IV, or Group V) because the viscosity modifiers required to give the wide viscosity range lose effectiveness in the bearings. Synthetic blends will have the same problem but to a lesser degree, being a blend of conventional and synthetic base oils. Most synthetic blends which meet ACEA A3/B3 are 10W40, while fully synthetics are 5W40 (more/less), so they compromise with a heavier base oil and lower viscosity index. These 10W-40 blends may work fine for you, even if you use them seasonally.
The most important issue (IMO) is the ACEA A3/B3 rating. This ensures adequate HTHS viscosity (in the bearings) and adequate high temperature stability for reasonable oil change intervals. Almost as important is a viscosity range meeting Saab recommendations. Once you have achieved all that, and you are changing on an appropriate interval, then the difference from one oil to another and its implication on change intervals, engine life, fuel economy, leakage, and come into play.
The exception (so far) is the 9-3 SS with its oil life monitor, which is calibrated for oil meeting a GM "Long Life" specification - you must use only Mobil 1 0W40 with that car unless you are prepared to modify the change interval from what the oil life monitor recommends.
