Thanks for all your input and opinions. This is definitely a "hot" topic and I should have known. In any case, after reading all the posts, I have gathered the following:
My driving style and oil change interval:
- 50/50 highway and stop-and-go.
- Oil changed every 8000km (sorry I think I initially said 5K)
- Currently use M1 5W30
- Driving style is not aggressive - typically rev under 4000RPM
- Car is 2002 95 Linear 5AT with 11,500kms
- Temps in Vancouver range from 0C to 33C year round. Avg 15C-22C.
My understanding from the responses received:
- M1 0W40 is the best (but I cannot find it locally).
- M1 15W50 is good for summer but not recommended for winter months.
- M1 5W30 is OK year round assuming I keep my current schedule (which I do).
- Castrol Syntec (German/Red label) 5W30 is good alternative but the "jury is still out on this"
I guess unless I can find 0W40, I should probably stick with 5W30 in the winter and COULD go with 15W50 during the rest of the year. Alternatively, could look for Castrol Syntec (German) 5W30 for year round.
Thanks again!
Simon (a little confused but have a better understanding now).
