Having owned a few American and Japanese cars, the thing that Saabs have going for them is that they are much more renewable.
I owned a Tauras SHO once upon a time. It was great for the first 50,000 miles and after that, despite my best efforts and considerable mechanical skills, I couldn't make it like new again.
Suspension bushings welded in place, motor glitches that I couldn't track down. That kind of thing. Plus a special tool was needed for even very basic repairs.
Saabs, by and large, are pretty easy cars to work on. Plus they can be made 'good as new again', given the time and effort.
Saab parts are perhaps 20% higher than a Honda Accord, which might be my suggestion, based on your criterea. Hondas are cheap, reliable but in my opinion too boring.
