These cars can be maintained very economically if they are driven with respect, maintained with a passion, and the owner has the skill, knowledge, and time available to scrounge for parts and perform the servicing. But for a nightmare scenario, blow the ABS on a '93 or older, an ACC computer, and a ZF A/T, and you're pushing 10 large if you replace all with new or factory rebuilt (for the a/t) at the dealer. And needing these three parts on a 10-15 year old car with 150,000 miles or so is not unreasonable - especially if said car has been maintenance challenged over its life.
The main economy of an older Saab is that you can purchase one in very presentable condition and have a comfortable, fast, sophisiticated, and safe ride for a few thousand purchase and a thousand or so a year in upkeep. You can completely rebuild a '92 Chevy Lumina for half what it'll cost you to keep the old Saab on the road, but in the end, you've got a POS car. But you aren't going to do that without knowledge, skill, and diligence.
