The problem with saab is that the stock suspension of the engine is positively related to the comfort againts vibration but it negatively related to the precision of shifting or handling for that matter. By stiffining the bushes (like Kyle and I have done) with either poly or with other methods (jamming stuff in 'em,etc) you make the feel of the shift better and the handling stiffer, however at the price of comfort of the ride. Of course, with the 2.3 engine(balance chains) the vibration problem is minimal. Further, as Kyle pointed out the shifter is way too woobly as designed by SAAB so by lowering the pivot point (a short shifter) the driver does gain considerable precesion of throws but again at the expense of luxury. The lower shifting point result in a shorter lever ( less distance from the fulctrom) so the feel IS quiet "rigid".
As for the synchos, I really want believe that they were always like that.
The Saab 5 speed is durable in terms of the mileage in can handle but the smoothness of shift leaves a lot to be desired even in Kyle's car. ( I have driven it)
The thing that I don't ubnderstand is why was system so for so long. It seems that there were a number of things that could have been done to have a better balance of comfort and precision.
