The risk with an automatic, on a 9000, really depends on how the previous owner treated/maintained the vehicle. Take the VID # to your local Saab dealer and have them do a service history. It wont tell you how the owner treated the transmission (did he make a habit of doing full-throttle upshifts and downshifts) but it may give an indication of how conscientious he was with general maintenance. It doesn't hurt to pull the dipstick out of the transmission and look for sensible anomalies: does it look dirty or smell burnt/old? As far as the rear main seals go, both vehicles have relatively equal mileage, and for being bullet-proof, the B234 beats both the B235 and B205's, so I wouldn't worry about that. The '96 was the 1st year for OBDII, which I consider a good thing. The only issue that tends to appear, but it does with all Saabs, is the DI. It's very sensitive to plug resistance and is a $280 item if it should fail. I don't like automatics, in general, but if I were buying one, I'd drain it, refill with M1 ATF, and change it every year. And, I would be very conscientious in avoiding full-throttle upshifts and downshifts.
