In comparing the two cars, I'm looking at a 96 LPT 9000 versus a later 9-3 turbo of at least equivalent power. In this comparison, the newer car wins not because it's newer but because it's a better car -- stiffer, tighter, stronger overall. The last run of NG900/9-3s got really good toward the end. If we were comparing FPTs or Aeros against a 9-3, the question might come out differently, but you have to realize that the 9-3 ain't no slouch. And again, which one is statistically more likely to grenade its transmission?
It's an easy choice for us DIY mechanics because 9000s are indeed easier to work on and are worth pennies on the dollar, but for a non-DIYer looking for a reliable day-to-day vehicle I'd hesitate to recommend one.
As for 9-5s, all things considered I'd rather have one than a 9000, but it'll have to wait until I can find one for a few grand that also comes with a free Tech II....
