Four 9000s, all with automatics-
'88 9000T - bought with 75K, after PO just put in a new tranny and wanted rid of it. 'New' tranny still running fine at 150K when car sold.
'88 9000T - Tranny died at about 90K. Rebuilt. Rebuilt unit died at 115K, which I blame more on the rebuilders. Tranny running fine when car sold at 140K.
'92 9000 - original tranny, but car has only 65K. A baby. Shifts fine.
'97 9000CSE - 107K, original tranny. Shifts fine.
So 50% of my automatic 9000s have had transmissions replaced. Now, one could look at it and say that early trannies had problems, but later ones didn't. The '92 is too young to count.
Do I think the tranny is a weak spot? Yes, for a car that can easily go 200K. Does the tranny last as long as on similar cars? Yes. When I buy a 9000 with an automatic (and that is all I've bought), I bookkeep $3K for a tranny rebuild. I also check the tranny when buying the car, and treat it right.
The ZF automatic is a good tranny, it's just not as great as the rest of the car. But I wouldn't rule out a 9000 automatic if that was what I wanted.
