I agree with Blob - maintenance history is what you need to be looking at. As the owner of a 1995 9k auto V6, I have kept to the schedule and so far the only problem I have had is the hazard light switch needed to be replaced as it became tempramental. that's it, apart from usual service items. and that really is it. no exploding gearbox, no exploding belts, no nothing (but that switch).
it is becoming increasingly tiresome reading all the stories and rumours about autos when 95% of these stories come from people who haven't owned one or driven one. the other 5% are from people who have cars with 150k+ mileage. you need to ensure the car has been looked after. you will have similar problems with a manual car that hasn't been looked after.
personally i can't comment on the other car as i haven't driven/owned one, but the 9k is a good, reliable car as long as you remember you are getting what was (when new) an expensive luxury car. that means proper maintenance and servicing - cut corners and you'll be paying for it later as with any car. the fact they are worth next to nothing now is down to high cost of maintenance, petrol consumption and size - same as BMW, MBz, Audi etc.
Anyway, take a look through this bboard to check out what may be in store, and best of luck with your chosen purchase.
