Saab might not be there quite yet but Volvo certainly is.
Unless something comes up to loosen the proprietary stronghold with having to download "drivers" to make the new part talk to the car again, it will be tough to DIY some of the repairs we now see popping up on the 99 and up Volvo's.
But also, that stronghold of technology drives the electronic rebuilders that keeps popping up repairing the part from the car which means you can just plop it back in after the repair and the car recognize it again without having to load any "drivers".
The also the ever growing demand from government agencies and people for clean air will slowly kill the cars since it will be more and more difficult to make them pass smog as older they get and the cost of making them pass will be way more than the car is worth.
Ones again the 99-01 Volvo S80 leading the way with having 4 Oxygen sensors and at about 100K or more, they all need to be replaced in one sweep to the tune of about $1200.00 at a shop.
If you are trying to make it on the cheap by replacing one at the time, you will cry yourself to sleep until you have replaced the 4th one.
And catalytic converters reaching up around $1500.00 for most of them and trying to install cheaper aftermarket ones will ones again make you cry yourself to sleep until a genuine or at least a big enough aftermarket to mimic the genuine ones are installed.
And as you can understand, an aftermarket one big enough to mimic the genuine is just about the same cost due to the precious metal used inside.
The only reason aftermarket cats are cheap is because they use less of the good stuff and don't last as long as the real deal.
