You are probably right, although it is very hard to transport hydrogen - it needs much higher pressures and is almost impractical to liquify (boiling temperature of just 21K).
The hydrogen economy does work in some isolated cases - e.g. Iceland were there is a lot of "free" geothermal electricity and no oil reserves.
