Electric cars & infrastructure

Batteries and charging technologies are definitely where money is being invested. Probably not enough of it yet, but the potential is there.
IMHO, short-range all-electrics like the Leaf are not the answer until charging stations are pretty much ubiquitous--as in some at every big box store, parking garage, office park, etc. How many to have will be a moving target, but short-range all-electrics just won't work in lots of places. At present they require too much planning for getting juiced up.
A co-worker of friend at Disney in Orlando bought a Leaf when they lived in California and had a 10-15 mile commute. Worked great. But they moved to Orlando and find the car will just barely make the new commute (longer, higher speeds), and if an extra errand is required or there's a detour due to construction, they risk running out of power. There's apparently no practical way to charge the car at the office, although that may change. The infrastructure has to catch up.
Things like the Volt make a lot more sense, especially if they could have the power like the Tesla.
