here are a couple pics of the differential in the 91 900 turbo I got a year ago. Last summer I took the trans apart before exchanging it for a manual transmission. According to the previous owner, the quick-oil-change place he took the car to accidentally drained the dif. fluid instead of the engine oil, but didn't tell him. He drove the car so rarely that it was months until the car suddenly wouldn't move, which was about 400 miles later.
Here are a couple pics of the pinion gear completely shredded off.

Hard to imagine how a manual transmission could last very long without any oil in it. My guess is that when emptied via the drain plug, there is still some residual in there that keeps things relatively lubed.
