It really all comes down to comfort level, regardless of what anybody else is doing here. If you've already been doing 5k intervals, then you're probably not going to surpass the useful life of the M1 compared to the condition of the dino at the end of 5k miles. I've got both a 9-3 2.0L LPT & a C900 2.0L NA, & I'm comfortable running M1 in both to 10k miles (past 20k miles on the 9-3 & 40k miles on the 900).

Here's what else I'll be doing this interval, & then I'll be posting the results here:
For the '99 9-3, I'll be sending in a clean oil sample of M1 0W-40 for a baseline to compare against the 10k mile analysis later on, & I'll be cutting open the OE filter to take a look. (H.O.Penn is providing the clean oil analysis free of charge, & I'll send the used oil there too since they're doing the clean analysis & they're only charging $13 for Saab owners. Ask for Denis.) Out of curiosity, I've got magnets from old computer disk drives on the outside of the filter. (That'll insure that I finally open the filter!) I just used the Saab Free Oil Change card to "chase out" the old Syntec 10W-30 with whatever junk the dealer uses (no, they didn't use Saab OE oil for the Saab Free Oil Change), & so I only ran it for about 20 miles before I drained it out. Because of the mix, I expect slightly skewed numbers compared to the baseline, but I'm not worried about it over this length of interval. So far, the car's not used ANY oil for the past two 10k mile change intervals.

For the '90 900, I also switched from Syntec 10W-30 to M1, but using the 15W-50 instead. (16*F this morning when I went to work. How did my car start? I don't know; I rode my bike!) I'm not sending a clean sample in on this car 'cuz I think I'm going to use Delvac 1 to top up & the long-term mix will have a greater effect on the final analysis. For the past 40k miles, this car's needed about 12oz of add'l oil for each 10k interval, or about every 8mos total at that time. Now however, the car gets used only for short trips & errands, & I wanted to have a slightly better cleaning/anti-acid additive pkg in there for as long as it's going to take me to get to 10k miles (I've only put about 1500 miles on it in the past 3&1/2mos, so I expect it to take maybe 2 yrs to finish this interval). Dyson analysis said they can account for different combinations of additive pkgs when they review the analysis, so I'll probably send that batch to them. I'm doing the same thing with the oil filter on this car too, but I'm using the bigger "old style" PF13.

I haven't decided if I'll switch either filter at 5k or not. I may change the 9-3's simply because of the mix of oils & the dinky OE filter (I was using Pure Ones on the previous two 10k intervals w/o changing mid-way), & I may change the 900's due to age if I'm only at 5k after a year. After this 10k interval the 9-3 will be OOW, so I'll switch from the small OE/PF53 filter to the larger PF13 to get the 50% greater dirt capacity & better flow characteristics.

Okay, let the flogging begin...
