Don't forget about the fact that Michael's switching over to syn from _____?. Yes, "the longer an oil filter remains in use, the better it filters," but only up to the point where it's so contaminated that it goes into bypass. Once that happens, you're not getting ANY benefit from increased filtration.
Since Michael will be cleaning out crud left behind by whatever the previous oil was, it might be prudent for him to change the filter 1/2 way thru on this first extended drain interval. Not only will it ensure that he removes any sludgy stuff that's been released, but it will allow him to add a bit more fresh oil for the remainder of the interval. What, maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of a qt?
After 10k miles (or whatever he decides to run) & 2 filters, I'd say he's okay to leave the same filter on for the entire interval. But again, that's just what I'd do, & that doesn't necessarily mean squat for anyone else.
