first, I now change every 5k, but looked into oil testing labs awhile ago and will send a sample in soon to see if I can extend intervals (Mobil 1 5/10W30.
Filters, they do work better the longer they are in, to a point. Think about a home A/C filter, they work better the dirtier they are, but eventually become so clogged that the A/C motor has to work harder to pull air thru and therefore may wear out too soon. In the case of a car oil filter, the filter will be bypassed if the filter becomes too clogged, right? For me, a new $5 OEM oil filter is no big deal, its cheap insurance, plus if any warranty issues come up relating to lubrication, thats one less thing for Saab to pick about...:-)
