"It seems unlikely the body shop touched your oil, and if they did, they would use the convincing argument they that don't touch oil..."
Not trying to be repetitive here, but my question was "why" do you think they did not touch the oil? I mean, the car was running fine before it was brought in. The deal with the "unknown" oil change is simply that my wife (not trying to be a jerk on the board but you guys know women) ... is "cloudy" on the details of the last oil change. She had been documenting and changing the oil at a certain Jiffy Lube since May of 2008. Then she said she went to another place because she had a coupon and can't remember where. Meanwhile, I've been fixing unrelated problems on the car here and there while she drives it limited miled per day about 5 days a week or so. The only "engine" related "symptom" I can come up with that I've even noticed before it went to this shop was this faint random rattle noise only audible in the cabin coming from the passenger side that would come and go. Sounded like a rat-tat-tat-rat-rat. However, that noise has been going on for many months and I was still trying to diagnose it. Again, if the car had been seriously low on oil I can't help but believe the symptoms would have been something far worse like what I'm having now.
The only reason I never reached out and checked the oil in the past few months is that I trusted she was changing it and given the way the car was running, etc. I had no reason to doubt her.
