Yeah, I hear ya. I wanted to run what I'm about to do to fix this problem by you guys. Seems there are a few shops in town that just do complete engine replacements. Admittedly, I haven't called around much ... but ran into one off an ad on Craigs. The guy seemed very knowledgable about it all and claimed to have done many SAABs over the years. Long story short, they are quoting me around $2900 (including labor and a "lifetime" warranty). The warranty isn't really lifetime as it's end-end for 6 months then parts and partial labor coverage after that. The engine is some kind of "checked out fairly low mileage engine" and it includes the turbo but not the transmission. So, I'd like to know what you guys think about doing this. I hope it's not another thing with the SAAB where you absolutely-positively must have some special "Indy" do it else it won't turn out. I still don't know what the word "Indy" means.
Anyway, about the Jiffy Screw. This guy took a different path as I explained it all to him. Turns out (and I thought the opposite) that an engine like the SAAB could in fact burn up a fair amount of oil if it had been filled with REGULAR oil after many years of synthetic changes. According to him, people get claims on Jiffy outfits for stuff like this often. I don't get it, because I thought synth was thinner and it was the other way around. I thought you shouldn't switch from synth back to regular. He took this so serious he said he wouldn't even tell me about it til I brought the car in. However, when I broke news that the Jiffy Screwbies came out before I think and refilled the car with regular oil he said well "forget it then" because they've already "modified" the situation so hard to prove in court.
Anyway, if what he says is true then I don't care what he thinks about my small claim against Jiffy. For one, if they can test for presence of synthetic oil then when can't they test the oil that's in the car now to see if there is any significant amount of synthetic oil? Two, even though he also believes they simply didn't fill the oil back up I don't believe that at all. I'm not willing to bet they did or did not. I don't know what they did as I wasn't there, but I STILL have no credible believable explanation as to why and how that much oil burned up in 8 months and 5K miles. The engine guy said they would be able to take a closer look at the engine and definitely would be able to remark on whether or not the actual damage was induced by low oil. I don't know what y'all think, but personally I think that alone is worth a shot with me in small claims court. They say that any man that represents himself has a fool for a client. Even though I haven't before, with God as my witness I'll be that fool. :)
Me and this SAAB have been though a lot together. I even had a dealership's attorney's threaten to sue me like 3 times for libel after I exposed how it was sold to me with covered up accident damage. The economy for cars is terrible right now so I certainly can't sell it. I couldn't even sell it for a decent price if it were in working order. If the engine replacement would work I can't help but think that would be a better plan than junking the SAAB and buying another car in the sub $4000 price range. It'll surely have a lot of "unknown" miles and impending "unknown" repairs to be done. At least I know where this crazy old SAAB has been and it sure has had a tough road. Maybe if I own it long enough and scratch up some cash to be a member here you guys will let me in the "SAAB in crowd" LOL. :)
