Again, the part that's really got me upset is that apparently it's NOT about the cost to actually rebuild the engine. They are quoting some 650 for the block and some small amount I think for the timing chain guides. It's that they are "scaring" me at this point with some 5K of additional "parts not covered" that they are rec'd replacement. I run a service business, and this just isn't how you do it - especially when you are "30 years experienced" as they claim. I know they don't have a magic wand. That's what I tell all my customers, but I get a lot of good business by telling them everything I know about what things MIGHT cost given the situation. It's not like they opened the hood and found an alien in my SAAB. They didn't open it and find no engine attached. I told them exactly what they were getting and they could have and should have told me about the very real possibility of all these parts and how they would not be covered under the already hefty 3,000 fee. Seems most in the group already agree with me to the point that it's not much worth it in today's market past the 3,000 mark. Unlike them, I also told them that emphatically. I even told them that was basically my ceiling to spend and didn't even want to proceed if they couldn't do it for that price. They listened to all this, didn't say anything , and dumped this on me 2 weeks later.
About the money in, they "haven't figured that out yet". I don't even know if they cashed the down payment check but Murphy's law would indicate they did. Since I don't have the money I used a credit card check so I'm not sure what if any recourse I have on that. I'm going to check into that also.
