Another "idea". I'm going in there today with a "friend of a friend" who is a mechanic at a local Volvo dealership. I don't know him that well, but the claim is that he's good and does work "on the side" and is currently looking to make extra money in this economy. Of course, his thoughts are concurring with what y'all have been telling me. Before we even go there today, he thinks these guys are trying to rip me off by simply charging the heck out of me for everything and using the bait and switch tactic by springing all these charges on me after ripping out the engine. I'm paying him like $50 to come over to this bad shop mainly so I've got someone with me who knows more about this stuff than I do. He is Mexican, so there is a bit of a language barrier. Just wondering what your thoughts would be on a guy with this background. There is only one SAAB dealership in this entire area, and I think only about two highly experienced mechanics at that dealership so it seems such skills are hard to find around here. Always have been from what I can tell.
If I wound up trying to get the car to this guy, he'd be getting the parts himself and doing the work at a friend's garage. He seems really honest in that he said he'd rather have me pay for the parts directly and at cost and then pay him a fair fee for labor. Only question I guess at this point is could he effectively do this work on this car? Would he have all the necessary tools, etc.
PS. God what a mess. I hate ripoff car shops. I especially hate it when they sure seem honest, but it's all a front to get you in and put the screws to ya.
