Update. Not sure. Well went out to the shop today with my friend. They had the engine taken apart and completely out of the car. Kind of a scare scene. Engines everywhere in rolling carts.
Anyway, I got pretty mad at the shop "VP" who I was meeting for the first time. Apparently they let the "sales" guy reel in the victims. We went over everything and it appears it's coming down to this.
- I've got a $1,500 "credit card" check which I have now found out may be difficult to dispute. I wrote this out to them in good faith in a down payment and it appears they do this so they can take all the money for nothing if you decide not to do their repairs or can't afford it. :( They insisted on such a downpayment before working on the car.
- Aside from all the other parts that are probably OK, it looks like I am left with a water pump (OK, but would be good to replace. they want about $200), the engine block (bearing grind damage they claim they can't fix), the oil cooler (can be "flushed" of any remaining metal from the bearing breakdown but best to be replaced. They want a ridiculous 500+ for that and won't include it in the original cost), and the clutch (plates are worn down. I was surprised since I haven't had problems with it yet. They want 800 to do the clutch even with everything out already).
The thing is these guys are some bad con artists. I never noticed they don't "accept" credit cards as a form of payment and now I know why. Naturally, this is a terrible situation for me since if I try to take the car somewhere else I'll be out $1500 for nothing at all.
We really had it out with the "VP" about the block as I never would think that wouldn't be covered as part of the rebuild and they want some $650 for it. Also, they simply should have made me aware of such possibilities but of course did not - just leave it in the fine print. Also, my friend brought up the fact that they could have simply taken the oil pan off and done an inpection to find debris and evidence of bearing damage, etc. Instead, they just blindly rip apart the whole engine so they can charge you a lot for nothing. Bad , bad diagnosis procedure.
I left it with him as I slammed the door that I expected the block to ultimately be included in the flat rate price as they insisted on doing a flat rate repair on this job. He was still shaking his head no.
It just seems like an impossible situation. If they will come down to the agreed flat rate and do the repair (just to get it out of their shop) then I guess I'd have to hope they do it right. However, I REALLY do not want to pay another dime to them except on credit card where I have at least some ready protection against their scams and probably their not so good warranty. The other angle is to eat the $1500 and take it to the SAAB Indy. I called him and he seemed reasonable - but I'm not sure if he's going to give me any kind of discount for the vehicle already being torn down. However, he did indicate that would be actually beneficial. I left him a message and am trying to talk to him a bit further about it. My friend guy doesn't want to do the job now that the vehicle is taken apart because he doesn't know it well enough to put it back together.
Well as usual thanks for any more ideas on this. I really have to pray I can come out of this OK somehow someway. I honestly wouldn't have taken it to these guys if I had any idea of how they operate. However, they put up a really good false sales front and I guess you have to be sharp to spot the problems before you proceed. An example was the cashiers or cash only. Only reason I didn't know that was because I happen to have the checks and not the credit card on hand. Just dumb bad luck.
