This is very true. My '94 9000CS threw its timing chain at 104K (due to an admitted poorly manufactured chain whose supplier was changed in 1995), but Saab would not pick up the tab because I had not had the 90K mile service done at the dealer.
I had all the receipts for the 90K work, some of which I had done, and some of which an independent shop had done, but they said "too bad... if we had done all the servicing, we'd pay for the repair".
Of course, that was an "implied" warranty as there was no official statement about coverage as there might be for this 8 year engine warranty. But I'd be very surprised if my car's engine blew up and they repaired it under the 8 year warranty, since the car hasn't seen a dealer in 70K miles. Just conjecture at this point however.
