"When an owner is loyal to a dealer they are more likely to go to bat for a customer."
What about the dealer (and yes, the manufacturer) being honest & forthright with their customers? Especially those spending multiple tens of thousands of dollars on a new or CPO vehicle? If the manufacturer specifies a particular quality level part or fluid, they expect the owner to follow those specifications in order to keep their warranty. Why shouldn't the manufacturer's representative (the dealer) be expected to follow those same specifications? (At the dealer level, they should be REQUIRED to!)
The reality is NOT that a dealer or manufacturer might be "willing to contribute to keep him coming back" if the owner's been convinced to use the dealer for service, but rather that the short term cost/benefit ratio of keeping one's word may or may not prove lucrative in the long term relationship with any one particular owner. As I mentioned, only my intermediate services (i.e., oil changes) were not done at the dealer. The major services WERE done there. Even then, what they said was included in their charges & what was ACTUALLY included in their charges were different.
If any owner is taking better care of their vehicle than the dealer would, thereby reducing the manufacturer's warranty failure costs, why should those owners be slighted? What you're outlining is tantamount to bribery. In other arenas that's considered corruption, & that's a pretty good description of the activities being outlined in this thread.
