I brought my car ('01 9-5 CPO) to a reputable dealer (in MA, car purchased in TX) with a coolant leak. It was the head gasket, which they were going to replace under warranty, but during the work, they found sludge EVERYWHERE. They checked the records, and found that the previous owner (lease) was nice enough to have skipped the 20K service, which they attributed the sludge to (the records show oil changes in 5K intervals since I've owned the car). The service mngr. told me that Saab traditionally does not cover work needed due to negligence, EVEN THOUGH THE NEGLIGENCE HAPPENED BEFORE I OWNED THE CAR. When I called Saab customer service, a woman informed me that "sludge is a tricky issue. Even though your car is CPO, it is still considered a "used car," and negligence issues are not covered." I was astounded. To make a long story short, the service mngr. called be back, saying that a Saab rep. looked at the car and decided that Saab WOULD cover the "desludging" procedure. However, in more or less words, I was given the impression that Saab was doing me a favor (I think they were going to write the work up as if the blown head gasket allowed coolant to get into the engine, resulting in milky-tan sludge, not the black sludge I really had).
Point to all this? NEVER BUY A SAAB (CPO OR NON-CPO) UNLESS YOU HAVE DOCUMENTATION OF OF REGULAR MAINTENANCE. IF AN OIL CHANGE WAS SKIPPED, THIS PROBABLY = SLUDGE.
