Not sure i share the same opinion... Posted by MisplacedYankee [Email] (#1756) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MisplacedYankee) on Thu, 12 Sep 2002 13:26:35 In Reply to: 9-5 really not up to standard. I have owned 2 audis and a BMW and this is my second Saab. I haven't gotten into the Mercedes thing yet (a little too old school for me) so I can't comment on Merc. Both of my Audis and my BMW were in the same price range (or more) than the Viggen and the 9-5 aero which I currently have.
Here are my thoughts point by point:
A)The interior finish of the car especially the fabric on the doors and the plastics on the dash are cheap stuff. The turn indicator and light switch are flimsy and lack the purposeful and solid feel of German makes.
>> Half true - I think Audi has some of the best fit and finish on their top makes. Both my Saabs have treated me well and nothing has broken. The flimsy sun shade is my only complaint. I do find the leather used in the Viggen and Aero to be second to none in this price range.
B) Lousy air-con. The blower lacks power and it makes fluttering sounds when on internal circulation.
>> I live in Texas and have NO complaints here -- and I should know. I would have that checked by the dealer.
C)Poor seating position. I'm a 6-footer and the steering wheel doesnt come out far enough for me to adopt a comfortable posture. Refer to Mercedes design for how it should be done.
>> Viggen and new sport seats in the aero are vast improvements. My Audi allroad had some of the most uncomfortable seats I have ever experienced. Merc and BMW seats are too stiff.
D) Noise insulation. Too much wind and road noise comes in. I dont feel cocooned.. I feel like i'm wrapped in clingfoil.
>> Thats a Saab thing. Merc I am sure are quiet - BMW (328is) felt the same as my Saab.
E) Vibration. When in D and at a stop, I get a back massage and a rub on my bottom. Even the brake pedal vibrates so my toes dont miss out on the action.
>> I have never had this issue with the Saabs I have owned - of course they were/are 5 speeds
F)Whats with the glove compartment? Its so deep that i need tongs to get my stuff!
>> Every car has its "quirk" - For my aero it is no changeholder and lack of cupholders, The audi - no compass (in an allroad no less), I can't remember what used to bug me about the BMW, but something sure did.
G)Boot. Can't fit golf clubs in easily. have to slide them in at an angle.
>> I think the 9-5 truck is huge -- almost VW Jetta like. For a car of this size I bet it is one of the biggest in the industry. BMWs have small trunks.
H)Rumbling at low rpms. When accelerating the car sounds hoarse and again vibrates up to 1800rpm
>> No comment
I)Power windows are horrendously slow
>> I wish they were auto-up. No complaints about the speed.
Overall I am very much for Saabs now. I won't buy another Audi after all the mechnical issues I had with my last one. The BMW was a great car, but overall value was questionable and they are too popular for my tastes. I wouldn't buy a boring Japennese car. Perhaps in my 40s and 50s I will appreciate a Mercedes, but I am not into them now. BMW is probably the only other brand of car I would consider against Saab, but at the end of the day I will probably go Saab. I am hoping by the time I want a 7 series BMW Saab will have a top of the line model above the 9-5.
