To compare a Merc or a BMW (you seem to miss out Audi - usually appears in these threads) with a Saab - is really missing the point.

Merc, BMW and Audi are high volume manufacturer's of 'high image' vehicles - with have vehicles that span the price range from the almost budget end of the market to the executive express. These manufacturers nuture their brands identity with the upmost care - witness the type of advertising they do - rarely boasting of the high levels of std equipment or specification - more likely the advert' will draw attention to some design detail.........often you don't even get a picture of the whole vehicle. BMW,Merc and Audi spend millions of dollars - globally - supporting sporting events, concerts etc of the type that should appeal to their target customers.

Guess what? It works - both BMW, Merc and Audi manufacture 100's of thousands of vehicles worldwide every year - and we all see then on the highway everyday. It always makes me laugh when travelling around the world - in the USA and the UK the Merc is one of THE prestige vehicles to have - in every other country in the world the Merc is the taxi cab of choice, reflecting the quality engineering and longevity - but not that image that Merc work so hard to preserve.

OK - so what about Saab then?

Saab is a 'niche' manufacturer - they make a small number of units (in a two model range) every year, for a discerning, loyal customer base (that's us lot!). If it wasn't for GM holding the purse strings - Saab would have been history years ago.

People who buys Saabs don't want a common Merc or BMW they want something different - - how many Saabs did you see on drive into the office today - 1 or 2? How many Mercs and BMWs? You'll see my point.

Is the quality comparable - I've done high mileages (100k+) in all of them - and I'd say yes. If anything the BMWs fall apart the quickest - and end up driving kind of 'sloppy' - the Mercs and the Saab stay together well.

If you want to express your freedom of choice - you might just drive a Saab - if on the other hand you are a 'sheep' well you'll be just happy following the rest of the herd - driving a Merc, BMW or Audi - theres' lots too choose from - bound to be one in your size................

Enjoy.
