Suggestions for improving the audio system

Hi all--
Does anyone have any suggestions for improving the audio system in a 92 900S? I'm inclined to first replace the head unit, but expect that the awful sound from the stock system will require some sort of speaker change as well. For the record, the stock system is awful--thin, gutless, shrill, tuneless, etc.
Has anyone installed a good sounding system in one without either spending tons of money or turning the car into a giant speaker box? I don't want to lose space--one of the reasons I like the car.
Cheers and thanks in advance.
Bob
