With my Alpine CD player and amps hooked up to the stock speakers in my Saab, the sound is just as horrible. The only benefit is that I can turn the volume up enough to make a sustained farting noise.
I guarantee that I could probably hook up my old Fisher Price record player to a set of quality (high efficiency) speakers and make it rival or better the sound of my Saab with the Alpine and OEM speakers.
The dynamic range and quality of sound from a CD can far surpass the dynamic range of any speakers that I could possibly afford - this is why I believe speakers are the weakest link. Some of my friends built their car stereos with top-quality decks and amps, but they never bought quality speakers. It always sounded awful!
Nonetheless, I hope you invest in something to meet your own price and satisfaction.
Great talking to you, and I hope your Saab treats you well - and vice versa:-)
