For the money- you will get more features (et al..) buying a Pioneer unit than if you spent the same $$ on a Alpine or Blua, no questions here- i did the shopping (your example- for $200 Apline, you would probably get 1 pre-out, for the same $$, Pioneer will give your 2 and a MP3 or hands free phone jack) . BRAND does matter in this price range- more than in others.
You are right- on most mid grade units, most boards and some components are the same in all. With that said- you getting about the same quality (& some extra bells and whistles) when you buy a Pionner.
Same goes for TVs- Panasonic makes the EXACT! same screen as a Sony model- $200 price differance. Again- BRAND
Add... both of us know, that a head alone makes NOT a system. It's a concert of components et al.. Speaking of concerts... front is key, I agree (especially on location). I'd argue that tweets alone in the front is all you need (although I back up with a set mids for some rounding). The rear and a sub will fill the car with rest (all channels). I can't stand being assulted by a full range system in my face. That's preferance- and we disagree.
I agree- quantity does not equal quality. I don't think I implied that!
Dig the audio talk- even if we disagree!
