When I got my 900 (hatchback) it had a clarion pro audio headunit (about 14 watts RMS 30-35 peak) and the front speakers were JBL GT 4". (Stock rear speakers) At the time I had a JL Audio 10" woofer in a bandpass box with a 140 watt amp.
This setup sounded nice, but eventually I blew out one of the rear speakers. So I got a pair of 6x9 clarion's on boxes and stuck them on the rear deck. What a difference that made, so much more sound from the rear it was ridiculous.
Eventually, being the young punk that I am, I craved MORE bass. So I replaced my wimpy 10" with a JL Audio 12" in a sealed box, with a 300 watt amp. Now my car sounds just the way I like it, LOUD. The only thing I might do now is get a 4 channel amp for my speakers, (and maybe a second 12" but that is a whole 'nother story)
Overall I would estimate my system cost about $1,000. But it would have been much cheaper with a smaller/cheaper sub and amp.

they have plenty of information for novices and audiophiles

Good luck
