time and not much money, you'll eventually find what suits you. I upgraded my system over the past three months. I wasn't necessarily looking for the perfect system, because I don't believe that's possible in a car. Of course, if I had a few thou to spend on a system, I'm sure I could convince myself that it is indeed perfect. But for a moderate amount, you could upgrade to near perfect.

Mine: A good Pioneer tuner CD amp: 200 watts, 4 channels (4x50=200), plus 2 rear sub connections ($180). Replaced the front stock 4" with a set of generic 4" 50 watt speakers ($20). Then I bought a bargain priced pair of Infinity 8" 150 watt subwoofers ($40) to custom mount in the rear seat (sedan) footwells. I built a set of cabinets ($5 wood panel, 6 hours labour) to house the speakers, designed with an open back so the rear speaker sound travels along under the seat compartment (I also cut the carpeting out along the back). The subwoofers sit face up toward the bottom of the rear seat, with the rubber coated speaker magnet sitting square against the car chassis floor. Subs are powered by a 300 watt amp, bought for $75 (display model).

At some point I noticed that if I firmly pressed the cabinets down, thus pushing the speaker housing against the floor - this dramatically increased the bass response. Kind of makes sense actually, allowing a firm part of the car body to essentially act as a speaker. So I cut the proper lengths of wood to mount beneath the seat which push down on the sub-woofer cabinets. The perceived difference in bass response is like sitting on a bass speaker cabinet instead of standing a ways from it. You feel it in your bones.

Lastly, I supplemented the stock 4 x 10's with an extra pair of generic 8" woofers along the rear dash panel($30). The sound of this admittedly odd system is incredible. A very full balanced sound fills the car completely from front to rear, no matter the volume. Total cost: less than $400. Sound equivalent: at least $1050.
