I've got an base wagon too ('01 bought 2 months ago). I agree that the OEM Mikes (Michelins) are bad as far as traction goes-especially wet traction. However, those same tires seem to last forever. (ugh) None of the Michelins I've had (MXMs, MXVs) have had good wet traction. I live in New Orleans, where a tire's wet traction is more important than its winter capability.
What I meant by OEM spec tires is to get tires with the same size/speed rating-not necessarily the same tire.
The only thing I personally take out of TR's online surveys is treadwear/tirewear. That to me is the only reliable piece of info to be gleaned from them. If a certain tire I was considering lasted only 10k miles in aggressive driving, that's objective evidence you can take to the bank. A person's perception of the other parameters (wet traction, etc) are solely subjective. Tirewear is not.
Having had some great tires on my '94 900SET, I guess I'm just used to a higher standard of traction. When the Michelins go, better tires will be at the top of my list. Anything less is unacceptable.
