It doesn't matter that the 9-3 SS is outselling the old 9-3/900. We've heard the story before. It's a new car and its bringing a few new people into the fold. The 9-5 did the same for a while AND YET
Saab is selling fewer cars now than it did when it had a all hatch lineup 15 years ago. What does that say about it's trunked strategy ?
The solution to Saab's sales problems aren't to get rid of the hatch. It's to offer unique vehicles and many of them on a common platform. Hatches, trunks, wagons, convertibles, but NO SUV. If that sounds like Subaru, well so be it. Subarus used to be called the poor man's Saab, but now they outsell Saab and cost more ! GO figure.
The 9-3X was a great idea. Every single manufacturer beat Saab to market with a crossover though. You snooze you lose. Great technology like the SSC and Trionic are hardly enough. Trionic cars are merely LEV while very other manufacturer offers ULEV cars now with just as much horspower. Mpg is merely average in our peer group.
No, I think I'll hang onto my '00 hatch for a while. The 9-3SS is a sweet car. But it's not for me. In fact for the first time in 22 years, Saab does not make a car for me.
I hope they will. Or me and the couple of million MILLION Saab hatch owners world wide will move into a different car brand some day.
