Thanks for noticing that Camrys, Honda and Passats are front wheel drive. Gee, perhaps front wheel drive like that low brow image hatch is a liability if folks associate FWD with lesse quality cars???? Better get GM's marketing cretins on that one fast before the next redesign!!!
I am gald you like your 9-3 sans hatch. But picture this, I just bought a a 40 gallon water heater at Sears and took it home in the "hatch of my 9-3". The whole way home I was feeling terrible about having to compromise on a car with a declasse hatch.
Say, I want to thank SAAB for eschewing the "declasse" hatch in favor of a trunk on the new 9-3. The trunk is ever so much more upscale and appealing than my hatch which makes my 9-3 w 17" rims resemble a low bugdet Ford Pinto or AMC Pacer.
As much as I think the new 9-3 has an improved suspension and other nice features, I do think SAAB can not reinvent itself as the "hatchless" car company because the competition by all the rest is just too stiff.
SAAB has never had the catchet of Mercedes, Audi and BMW so why would SAAB drop the hatch in hopes of appealing to people who make their emotional car buying decisions based upon the external self-affirmation one achieves through the acquistion of well regarded auto brand??? So why then did the cretins at GM insist in turning the new and improved SAAB 9-3 into a Acura TL and Audit A 4 FWD wannabe???? I will buy an A4 AWD wagon before I ever buy an hatchless SAAB 9-3.
Put it this way, what did SAAB have that no one else did??? Was it a turbo, No. Was it FWD, no. Then what made a person want to visit a SAAB dealer for a test drive????
