We are a multicar family (2) and they are both Saabs. A '97 5 dr 900 and a '00 5 dr 9-3. So if the logic is we should buy a minivan or SUV and a trunked Saab, well, guess what ? Saab just lost our business. They don't make a minivan/SUV and we wouldn't buy one if they did. So even if we bought a 9-3SS, they still lost the other sale. We are going to keep our cars for a while, so Saab will have to produce something with more utility if they want my business.
Saab expects to sell 135000-140000 cars this year. Hardly a rousing endorsement of its new 9-3SS when most buyers are repeat Saab customers coming off leases. Yes its a lovely car. But it isn't going to put Audi, BMW or Volvo on the skids. In fact they won't even notice. Sure the odd person will buy an 9-3 instead of an A4, but Audi sales are 6 times what Saab sales are. Audi sales have not dropped since the intruction of the 9-3SS. Not have BMWs or Volvos. In fact they have all gone up, as the demand for their products goes up. Only Saab stagnates. So tell me how the trunk only approach is helping ?
Sure I love Saabs, but they don't make a car I would buy right now. In fact they don't make a care that most people would buy at all. That's why they sell so few cars a year even with big discounts. Saab needs to sell 200000 cars a year to be viable. We are a looooooong way from that. Closest we ever came was in 1988 with the all hatch 900-9000 line. Maybe a notchback, but how many of those did they sell ?
