The weaker oil pump and finer screen in the 9-5 vs the 9000 is something I read in The Nines a while back where they were looking into the root causes of sludging. I do regular oil changes and have not had issues, but for those expanding the size of the holes, they should realize that they were probably designed that size for a reason.
I have a background in engineering, so I'm well aware of the subtleties involved in systems. Even an engineer, without proper drawings etc, can run the risk of messing it up - it can be hard to tell just by looking at something, and reverse engineering is fraught with difficulty in some but not all cases (chair easy, other things, potentially less so!). Of course, one is free to experiment on their own stuff! More people these days should be able to do basic maintenance and repairs, so really, I do agree with you.
