Hi Keith
Kudos to you in your desire to make a difference in the lives of young people. Many studies have pointed out that there is a huge shortage of qualified science/math/engineering faculty in today's junior and senior high schools. Among many other things, I train practicing and aspiring high school teachers in advanced topics in ecology/evolution/field studies.
Many cities, such as Boston, have incentive programs for young professional that wish to enter the teaching field. Training is provided along with a teaching job that is compensated at rates beginning in the K40's. In addition, Teach For America (sort of an urban Peace Corp) is U.S. Govt funded and provides an equally compelling entre' into the field.
Here is my e-mail: eric.strauss@bc.edu and website: http://www.urbaneco.org
Cheers,
eric
